WARD MESSAGE

I like to bear my testimony of the Prophet Joseph Smith, of the Book of Mormon and of God’s love to His children. To start, many, including myself, are recognizing that there are many voices out there in the world to try to get your attention.  It can be so confusing because the voices conflict in many ways.  Many are saying, “Listen to me”.  Others are saying, “This is the way”.  Which voice do we trust?  Can we trust any voice?

In some ways, we are experiencing what Joseph Smith experienced when he was a young teenager.  It wasn’t until he offered a simple prayer that he began to receive answers to his questions..  During his simple prayer, God our Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, appeared to the young boy.  They spoke to Joseph Smith and called him by his name.  They gave him instructions and he was later called to be a prophet.

I believe in Joseph Smith and of his prophetic calling.  I believe that he did in reality see God and heard His voice, a voice that he can trust.  Later, Joseph Smith translated the Book of Mormon by the gift and power of God.  How I love the Book of Mormon.  The Book of Mormon has helped me tremendously in building my foundation on the Rock of Jesus Christ.  I believe that the Book of Mormon is the word of God and that it truly testifies of Jesus Christ.  I honestly believe it will help a man draw closer to Jesus.

One of the revelations that came as a result of the prophetic calling of Joseph Smith is the tender and sweet account of Enoch experiencing the love of God towards the children of men when Enoch sees God weeping.  Despite all the power, glory, and majesty of God, Enoch witnesses how personal God is towards His children by being there for them (Moses 7: 29-30).   I come to think that God is in the details of our lives.  He knows our names and cares for us.  He is aware of our joys and struggles.  He understands what we are going through.  He is in relentless pursuit of us as Elder Patrick Kearon so phrased it in his talk in the previous General Conference.  God knows the way for He is the way, the truth, and the life.  I believe that God’s love is real and can be felt.

Jesus Christ, God’s love, Book of Mormon, Joseph Smith.  Do you believe in these things?  If so, are you willing to be open and share your beliefs with others?  If you don’t believe in these things, please know there is hope and you can come to believe in these things.  It starts with a sincere desire to believe and then to simply offer a humble prayer to God with the intent to obey.  That is how Joseph Smith began receiving his answer.  You can trust the voice of God. (3 Nephi 11:3)

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

What is food storage?

We encourage [you] to prepare for adversity in life by having a basic supply offood and water and some money in savings. We ask that you be wise... [and]do not go to extremes... With careful planning, you can, over time establish a home storage supply and a financial reserve.

There are three main components to food storage:

It is important to remember that you should not go to extremes when establishing your food storage. For example, it is not wise to go into debt to establish your food storage all at once. Develop it gradually so that it will not become a financial burden.

WARD MESSAGE

I have been thinking recently about how much our daily choices can affect the course of our

lives. Some choices obviously do not have a huge impact on our future like what we chose to

eat for lunch, or where to shop for food or other goods. However, some other decisions, that

may seem minor, can over time, greatly influence eventual directions and destinations of our

lives. In Proverbs 29:18 we read the message: “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” At

first that seems a little dramatic, but as I think about it more, I realize the wisdom in it. In our

lives it is easy to get caught up in everything that is going on, and just do whatever we can to

keep afloat. Sometimes it is difficult to see some of the things that are most important, when we

are so caught up in the daily struggles and turmoil around us. Keeping a vision of who we want

to be and where we want to end up, can help us maintain proper perspective and make better

choices.

President Russell M. Nelson in the book, “Heart Of The Matter,” counsels us to “Begin with the

end in mind. Do not take even one step in a direction that you do not want to go.” If we can

keep a vision of where we want to get, it is easier for us to make the choices that will help us

arrive there. As we have learned from Elder Uchtdorf, a plane that is off course even just one or

two degrees can end up in a very different location than desired.

In the October 2023 general conference, President Nelson admonished us to always “Think

celestial.” Choices that may seem nearly inconsequential can begin a course of direction that

we should not take. Some things that come to mind: “I am so tired, I think I will skip scripture

study tonight.” “I don’t feel like praying right now. Missing once isn’t a big deal.” “This movie or

book is good, except for a few parts, so I will just watch or read it anyway.” “I am on vacation, or

have a lot to do. Missing church this week will be okay.” When we are confronted with these

and other choices, if we will take a moment and just think celestial, it will help us keep the

proper perspective. “Will this get me closer to God and the Celestial Kingdom?”

I hope we can all “think celestial” in all of the choices that we make, and always strive to select

the best options that will help us arrive where Heavenly Father wants us to be. I know if we do

this, we will find more peace and joy in our lives, even amid turmoil and strife around us.

Farewell to our super amazing graduates!!

Let us all take this counsel from Elder Ojedirin as we journey on our covenant path.

In speaking to students of Brigham Young University–Hawaii during a campus devotional Tuesday, May 21, Elder Adeyinka A. Ojediran, a General Authority Seventy, shared the Prophet’s words and related how it applied to his own education.

Due to his family’s “humble background” in Ibadan, Nigeria, his parents made sacrifices to help him get an education. There were times, he said, where there was a lack of food and he could not afford textbooks. As a 23-year-old college student, however, he was taught the restored gospel of Jesus Christ and became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

“One of the priorities and patterns I established was to build my spiritual foundation on the rock of our Redeemer, who is Jesus Christ. That made it easy for me to succeed in my academics as other priorities were laid as building blocks on this foundation over which the devil’s mighty winds, shafts in the whirlwind and storm have no power” (see Helaman 5:12), Elder Ojediran related.

Noting BYU–Hawaii’s beautiful beaches and mountains and temperate climate, Elder Ojediran advised students to establish their own academic priorities and patterns to help them keep focused on their educational and career goals and not become distracted by “the fun things” in their environment.

While establishing priorities and patterns to navigate mortality is as important as establishing them academically, spiritual priorities are even more important, he continued, “because they have eternal consequences.”

The Lord created “all things both spiritual and temporal” (Doctrine and Covenants 29:31), and while academic success and career are “wonderful and desirable” the benefits are ultimately mostly personal and temporal.

However, engaging in God’s work coupled with academic and career accomplishments “combines temporal and spiritual efforts that positively impact all of God’s children in this life and assures joy in eternity,” Elder Ojediran said.

Elder Ojediran invited students to avoid the temptation to just go through the motions. “Take up the challenge to become like the Savior by your labor of love and commitment to living the doctrine of Christ. I promise you that the Savior Himself will hold you by the hand, walk with you and guide you in this journey of becoming like Him as you continually abide in Him. I promise you that as you walk with Christ, you will receive His light, and as you continue in God, His light will grow brighter and brighter in you, until the perfect day.”

WARD MESSAGE

Focus on Jesus Christ. Fortify Families. Follow the Prophet.

Earlier in the year we had the opportunity to participate in both Stake Conference and Ward Conference. And then a month ago, we were blessed to listen to General Conference. As I study the messages of our prophet, apostles and church officers in General Conference, I am finding the theme for our Stake, “Focus on Jesus Christ. Fortify Families. Follow the Prophet.”

Focus on Jesus Christ:

I believe the Lord’s admonition to “be still” entails much more than simply not talking or not moving. Perhaps His intent is for us to remember and rely upon Him and His power “at all times and in all things, and in all places that [we] may be in.” Thus, “be still” may be a way of reminding us to focus upon the Savior unfailingly as the ultimate source of the spiritual stillness of the soul that strengthens us to do and overcome hard things.

True faith is always focused in and on the Lord Jesus Christ—in Him as the Divine and Only Begotten Son of the Eternal Father and on Him and the redemptive mission He fulfilled.” “Be Still, and Know That I Am God” By Elder David A. Bednar

Fortify Families:

We have been promised, “Because of our covenant with God, He will never tire in His efforts to help us, and we will never exhaust His merciful patience with us.”

It is through the sealing covenants in the temple that we can receive the assurance of loving family connections that will continue after death and last for eternity. Honoring marriage and family covenants made in temples of God will provide protection from the evil of selfishness and pride.

Consistent care of brothers and sisters for each other will come only with persistent efforts to lead your family in the Lord’s way. Give children opportunities to pray for each other. Discern quickly the beginnings of discord, and positively recognize acts of unselfish service, especially to one another. When siblings pray for each other and serve each other, hearts will be softened and turned to each other and to their parents.

In part, that is what is described by Malachi as he foretold of the coming of the prophet Elijah: “He shall plant in the hearts of the children the promises made to the fathers, and the hearts of the children shall turn to their fathers. If it were not so, the whole earth would be utterly wasted at his coming.” “All Will Be Well Because of Temple Covenants” by President Henry B. Eyring

Follow the Prophet:

The most important of these events occurred on Easter Sunday, April 3, 1836.4 On that day, Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery experienced a series of remarkable visitations. First, the Lord Jesus Christ appeared. The Prophet recorded that the Savior’s “eyes were as a flame of fire; the hair of his head was white like the pure snow; his countenance shone above the brightness of the sun; and his voice was as the sound of the rushing of great waters.”

During this visitation, the Lord affirmed His identity. He said, “I am the first and the last; I am he who liveth, I am he who was slain; I am your advocate with the Father.”

Jesus Christ then declared that He had accepted the temple as His house and made this stunning promise: “I will manifest myself to my people in mercy in this house.”

This significant promise applies to every dedicated temple today. I invite you to ponder what the Lord’s promise means for you personally.” “Rejoice in the Gift of Priesthood Keys” by President Russell M. Nelson

May we embrace the truths taught to us. I am grateful to know these truths and strive to live them daily.

This old pop song says,

"I feel the earth move under my feet, ( might be an earthquake)

I feel the sky tumbling down, tumbling down…” (maybe a wind or thunderstorm)

and this song "The prophet said to plant a garden so that's what will do…"

May, the lovely month of May is a perfect time to Refresh, Reevaluate, and Restore you family Emergency Preparedness Plan.

Some suggestions to review. (you can come up with others).

Gardening helps all of the above, it reminds & teaches us the Law of the Harvest. In this tech culture it is a powerful reminder that life and good results in work, school and relationships take time, patients, nurturing, prayer and persistence. You can’t click a cucumber into existence. When the crop flops you have to "Pick Yourself Up, Dust Yourself Off and Start All Over Again” (another even older song). Gardening is a bonding family activity and you can share your abundance with The Cache Valley Food Bank any time you have more than you can use.

Mystery question, WHERE DO YOU MEET IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD for direction if there is an emergency?

My neighbor in SLC had 13 children. Every Family Home Evening he would ask his children , “now where do we meet in an emergency?”

Make sure ALL your family understands your plan!!!

WARD MESSAGE

God is in Relentless Pursuit of You

With some interest I listened to Elder Patrick Kearon’s first general conference talk as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. It was certainly a memorable one. From introductory stories about a policeman and a surprised mother in law, it peaked my attention. How was this new Apostle going to get back on track? It came quickly;

The Father’s beautiful plan is designed to bring His children home, not to keep them out. “God is in relentless pursuit of you.

I know some feel a weight as they contemplate the ideals of perfection and a focus on their own imperfections. It can all often seem beyond our reach amidst the challenges and trials of mortality. Perhaps some feel as if Gods plan is to sift humanity to only call the righteous to him. Perhaps we miss understand Matthew 7:13-14 “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.”

Elder Kearon was presenting it differently this April conference. He said “One of Jesus’ most consistent invitations was to change and repent and come unto Him. …God wants for us a radical reorientation of our selfish and prideful impulses, the eviction of the natural man, for us to ‘go, and sin no more,’ … Are there things we need to do, commandments to keep, aspects of our natures to change? Yes. But with His grace, those are within our reach, not beyond our grasp,” The key word in this quote for Elder Kearon is grace and I encourage us all to study its meaning from the scriptures and conference talks and to seek for it. Elder Kearon continued,

The intent of the Father’s great plan of happiness is your happiness, right here, right now, and in the eternities. It is not to prevent your happiness and cause you instead worry and fear.”

If you are prone to worry that you will never measure up, or that the loving reach of Christ’s infinite atonement mercifully covers everyone else but not you, they you are misunderstanding “Infinite” means infinite. “infinite” covers you and those you love.”

Listening to General Conference stands as a profound privilege for every member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Through this sacred gathering, we, as a global family of believers, partake of the living waters of revelation and inspiration poured out by the Lord's chosen servants over a weekend. If some nodded off during conference or missed a talk for some reason or another there are many ways to still incline our ears to the words of prophets, seers, and revelators. Conference is ongoing for listening or reading in our modern technological society and our hearts can still be opened to receive divine guidance tailored to our individual needs and circumstances. Choosing to listen is the entrance to the strait gate, and narrow way. Perhaps we will come to understand that “Jesus specializes in the seemingly impossible. He came here to make the impossible possible, the irredeemable redeemable, to heal the unhealable, to right the unrightable, to promise the unpromisable. And He’s really good at it. In fact, He’s perfect at it.” -- Elder Patrick Kearon, 2022.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

President Harold B. Lee taught in October Conference 1970 the  way to be prepared is to follow the Prophet.

"Now the only safety we have as members of this church is to do exactly what the Lord said to the Church in that day when the Church was organized. We must learn to give heed to the words and commandments that the Lord shall give through His prophet, 'as he receiveth them, walking in all holiness before me; . . . as if from mine own mouth, in all patience and faith' (D&C 21:4–5). There will be some things that take patience and faith. You may not like what comes from the authority of the Church. It may contradict your political views. It may contradict your social views. It may interfere with some of your social life. But if you listen to these things, as if from the mouth of the Lord Himself, with patience and faith, the promise is that 'the gates of hell shall not prevail against you; yea, and the Lord God will disperse the powers of darkness from before you, and cause the heavens to shake for your good, and his name’s glory' (D&C 21:6). . . .

We have just had  April conference.

Let us study the teachings of  leaders over the next six months and correct our lives where necessary, to live as we have been directed to from the Lord through his chosen leaders.

WARD MESSAGE

As with the beauty of the budding blossom and new plant growth emerging through the warming soil, may we remember from whom those blessings come. “All things bright and beautiful, all creatures, great and small, all things wise and wonderful, the Lord God made them all.” (All Things bright and Beautiful, Primary Songbook, text by Cecil Francis Alexander) With the warmth and hope of spring, our earth emerges from its sleeping dormant state

of winter. May we also find hope and renewal in our commitment to he who created us and this glorious earth.

As the earth in the northern hemisphere tilts toward the more direct light of the sun in our springtime, we enjoy the warmth of the season and the miracle of new life all around. May we seek the direct light of the Son, God’s Only Begotten Son, and turn our focus and faces directly toward Him. “He is risen! He is risen! Tell it out with joyful voice. He has burst his three days prison; let the whole wide earth rejoice. Death is conquered. Man is free. Christ has won the victory.” (He is Risen, Hymn 199, text by Cecil Frances

Alexander)

The resurrection of Jesus Christ gives hope. Because Jesus Christ was risen from the death of his mortal body and raised to an immortal body, each of Heavenly Father’s children, born to this earth will be resurrected or raised from a mere mortal finite body to a body of immortality, or an eternal body that will never again die. Because of our Savior’s infinite love for each of us, he gave an infinite atonement. His atonement was given as redemption to satisfy justice, for those who will act in faith toward repentance and commitment toward following Him.

My testimony of Jesus Christ is harbored in the words of the hymn I Know That My Redeemer Lives, Hymn 136. “He lives, to bless me with His love. He lives to plead my case with Heavenly Father above. He lives to comfort me when I am failing or faint. He lives to hear my soul’s complaint. He lives my hungry soul to feed. He lives and richly blesses me in time of need. He lives to guide me as I listen for his promptings. He lives and comforts my fears. He lives and knows how to calm my troubled heart, bringing peace. He lives and grants me daily breath and all manner of other blessings of life. He lives and loves me as a loyal friend does in kindness and wisdom. He lives as a worthy Leader, a mighty Ruler, a Prophet, Priest or King. He lives and by Him I shall conquer mortal death and spiritual death. He lives all glory to his name, our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ.” (Hymn text by Samuel Medley)

I have hope in the resurrection and faith in the redemptive power of the atonement of Jesus Christ. I know that my Redeemer Lives. Happy Easter and Springtime.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

In 3 Nephi 17 1-3 we read:

1 Behold, now it came to pass that when Jesus had spoken these words he looked round about again on the multitude, and he said unto them: Behold, my  time is at hand.

2 I perceive that ye are weak, that ye cannot understand all my words which I am commanded of the Father to speak unto you at this time.

3 Therefore, go ye unto your homes, and  ponder upon the things which I have said, and ask of the Father, in my name, that ye may understand, and  prepare your minds for the  morrow, and I come unto you again.

Stake Conference and General Conference are coming soon. Now is a good time to PREPARE our hearts and minds for the Lord’s instruction to us through His prophet and apostles and stake leaders.

Wishing you a blessed Easter Tide.

WARD MESSAGE

I love Temples! I love everything from the beauty and majesty of these incredible buildings to the most simple and elegant detail of their gorgeous landscape and variety of beauty, to the artwork and color scheme that each temple is uniquely made for the area. But most of all, I love the feeling of peace, comfort, and of being welcomed home that I feel when I’m in the temple or on its grounds. It’s a little piece of heaven, here on earth, that we all have the blessing of enjoying if we choose to make it a priority in our lives.

In Elder Dale G. Renlund’s last conference address called “Jesus Christ is the treasure”, he states….”You may have noticed that many new temples have been announced in recent years, bringing temples ever closer to members. Paradoxically, as temples become more accessible, it may be easier for us to become more casual about temple attendance. When temples are distant, we plan our time and resources to travel to the temple to worship there. We prioritize these journeys.”

With a temple close at hand, it can be easy to let little things get in the way of attending, saying to ourselves, “Well, I’ll just go another time.” Living close to a temple does bring greater flexibility in scheduling time in the temple, but that very flexibility can make it easier to take the temple for granted. When we do, we “miss the mark,” undervaluing the opportunity to draw closer to the Savior in His holy house. Our commitment to attend should be at least as strong when the temple is nearby as when it is distant.”

I hope and pray we’re not taking having a Temple so close to us for granted. I hope we make it a goal and a priority to attend often, your often may be different than my often, but the blessings that we receive from there will strengthen against the powers of the adversary. It blesses us with knowledge and understanding of God‘s love for us and for all His children. I hope you will all attend the temple this month and enjoy these blessings that we have been given.

WARD MESSAGE

In December we had a retirement dinner for one of our company founders and CEO. This is someone who hired me over 30-years ago and someone I greatly respect. We had the opportunity to recognize the accomplishments of a long and impactful career. The CEO spoke of starting the company with the other founder who passed away several years ago. He said there could not be two more different people. Besides a shared passion for their area of expertise, they were on the opposite ends of the spectrum politically, different religious beliefs and different ideas on how to run a business. Yet, he said, the partnership worked.

The CEO, a devout member of the Church and the other founder a member of the Baha’i faith. How is it that such partnership not only worked but thrived? In my lifetime I have noticed society has become increasingly polarized and less tolerant for others’ opinions and beliefs leading to contention. In 3 Nephi 11, 29-30, it tells us that “he that hath the spirit of contention is not of me, but of the devil”, and “this is not my doctrine, to stir up the hearts of men with anger, one against another; but this is my doctrine, that such things should be done away.”

As we move into a new year lets think about following President Nelson’s advice when faced with disagreements. Express your love, don’t think you know best, don’t compete, or rigorously defend your position and let the spirit and pure love of Christ guide you. Returning to my original question regarding how two very different people form a lasting successful business. I think it comes down to love and mutual respect, and in this case a shared passion. One of my goals for the coming year, is to be kinder, gentler and more willing to listen before I speak. Happy New Year!

WARD MESSAGE

In the Grand Council before our earthly life began, it was determined that Jesus Christ would be our Redeemer and the Savior of the world.

“But, behold, my Beloved Son, which was my Beloved and Chosen from the beginning, said unto me—Father, thy will be done, and the glory be thine forever.”
(Moses 4:2)

Since that time, the birth of Jesus Christ was foretold, anticipated, and longed for for thousands of years. There were many signs that bore witness of his birth, and his birth itself was a sign that Christ’s atonement and resurrection would soon follow.

One of the signs that was given of His glorious birth was the star shining brightly in the night sky. I love lights – Christmas lights to be more precise. I turn them on at the end of November when they have all been put up and don’t turn them off until February. They bring light to a dark and dreary world. They give us hope that the cold, dark winter will one day pass and spring will come. Light and darkness cannot occupy the same space at the same time. The Christmas lights in my yard dispel the dark of winter. But what should these bright and joyful lights of the Christmas season really be reminding me of?

Jesus Christ.

For He is the Light of the World. He himself said, “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life” (John 8:12). He set the perfect example for us to follow. His example of love and charity is especially evident during the Christmas season. Throughout this season, each of us wants to make sure that everyone is loved and cherished, that everyone has a gift, everyone has plenty to eat, and that no one is lonely. We minister to all that are struggling, seeing that their needs are met. It’s my favorite part of the Christmas season.

With that being said, sometimes after the Christmas season is over, when I sit thinking about how I should go about ministering to others, I seem to have a stupor of thought. However, I have come to realize the answer I am looking for is right before my eyes. It is all of you. I am absolutely amazed by how much love and charity you all have for each other. I need to look at the example of love and charity that is displayed by each of you during the Christmas season and use that example to guide me in showing love and charity throughout the rest of the year.

I know that as we love and minister to others at this Christmas season and throughout the year, we will all be inviting the light of Christ to illuminate our lives. May God bless each of you and your families this Christmas season!

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

Probably 30 years ago, my mom hosted Thanksgiving dinner at our home in Bountiful, UT.  About halfway through dinner preparations a police officer knocked on our door.  The water main had broken and was flooding the street.  We were safe from the geyser, but all the water had been turned off.  That meant no water to cook the mashed potatoes.  No water to wash down the counters.  A house full of guests and no water to flush a toilet.  But thank heavens my mom had stored water! We may not experience a major global event, but just a little bit of preparation may turn a total disaster into a funny story you can tell later.

WARD MESSAGE

At the beginning of Christ’s ministry to the Nephites, recorded in 3 Nephi, Jesus taught the doctrine of Christ. 3 Nephi 11:31-32 says, “ …. I will declare unto you my doctrine. And this is my doctrine, and it is the doctrine which the Father hath given unto me; and I bear record of the Father, and the Father beareth record of me, and the Father and the Holy Ghost beareth record of the Father and me; and I bear record that the Father commandeth all men, everywhere, to repent and believe in me.”

Earlier in the Book of  Mormon, Nephi testified of the doctrine of Christ in the final chapters of 2 Nephi. These chapters were his final testimony to his people and to us. Nephi began his final words with “...my soul delighteth in plainness; for after this manner doth the Lord God work among the children of men. For the Lord God giveth light unto the understanding; for he speaketh unto men according to their language, unto their understanding.” ( 2 Nephi 31:3) As Nephi continued to write, the doctrine of Christ was explained with clarity and the conviction that Jesus is the Christ. Nephi spoke of Christ without the limitations of earthly time. Jesus’ birth, life and atoning sacrifice had not yet happened. All prophets of God had testified of Him and of His central role in the plan of salvation. Because of Nephi’s prophetic experiences and holy scripture, he was able to teach his people of the Savior’s birth, life and atoning sacrifice. These ancient people had Christ’s example before them as we do now. The atonement of Jesus Christ is offered to all, as are the ordinances of salvation.

In President Nelson’s General Conference address “Thinking Celestial”, our prophet quoted 2 Nephi 32:5 in this counsel: “Seek guidance from voices you can trust - from prophets, seers, and revelators and from the whisperings of the Holy Ghost, who “will show unto you all things what ye should do.”Please do the spiritual work to increase your capacity to receive personal revelation.”

One of my favorite verses on what spiritual work looks like is 2 Nephi 31:13, “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, I know that if ye shall follow the Son, with full purpose of heart, acting no hypocrisy and no deception before God, but with real intent, repenting of your sins, witnessing unto the Father that ye are willing to take upon you the name of Christ, by baptism - yea, by following your Lord and your Saviour down into the water, according to his word, behold, then shall ye receive the Holy Ghost; yea, then cometh the baptism of fire and of the Holy Ghost; and then can ye speak with the tongue of angels, and shout praises unto the Holy One of Israel.”

This verse is full of speaking plainly for the sake of our understanding and yet it is not a  simple verse. Pure doctrine is in every phrase. It is worth our attention to learn what the Holy Ghost would teach us about our day to day journey of living the doctrine of Christ.

The doctrine of Christ is living the plan of salvation with our Savior as our companion and perfect example. My hope and prayer is that we each live this daily path.

The Future is as Bright as Your Faith

The past month there have been many changes in our lives. The releasing of an epic bishopric, to the sustaining of a new and exciting one (both of which we are so grateful). The beginning of a new school year, where some will be going to elementary, middle school, high school, even college for the first time! And one of my favorites, College football has begun.

As I have contemplated the message I would like to share with our ward, I wondered what message the Lord would like me to deliver. How can we navigate all of these new changes and happenings? In my life experiences, there is only one way. To move forward with faith.

Several years ago my family was part of a very tragic event. My younger brother, Britten, was involved in a horrific accident while serving a mission in São Paulo Brazil. While he and his companion was attempting to cross the street he was hit by a large bus and his head sustained the entirety of the blow. He was eventually taken through the crowded traffic to the nearest hospital and our family was notified. This was an earth shattering call for us all to receive. Lora, baby Taylee, and I were in San Diego at the time and immediately left to drive through the night to be home with my family. I’ve never spent so much time praying and focused on one thing as I did on that drive home. So many questions- how did this happen? Why did this happen? What is going to happen? Along with a million others.

When we arrived back to Cache valley the church had arranged for my parents to travel to be by Britten’s side as he fought for his life. Lora and I stayed with my two other brothers and continued to plead with the Lord on Britten’s behalf.

When my parents arrived in Brazil the doctors informed them Britten had been without oxygen to his brain for quite a time. While they were on their flight the doctors asked the mission president for permission to harvest his organs, as he would not make a recovery. Shortly before they arrived, what happened next the doctors could only describe as a miracle as his brain started to show small signs of activity.

This was the beginning of the many miracles our family was blessed to see over the coming days, weeks, and months along Britten’s recovery. After months of being in a coma and finally being able to be transferred to SLC, we were able to hold our dear brother in our arms as he had to learn all over again how to talk, walk, and find himself. There were SO. MANY. hard times along the way, but our family was never stronger as time and time again our faith was buoyed up.

As with all unknown and scary things that life throws at us, I implore you to move forward with faith. Our Heavenly Father and Savior Jesus Christ are our anchors in this crazy, awful, beautiful world and if you have faith in them and the good they have planned for us then all will be well. I testify that going forward with faith is the very process of becoming like Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. As we do so, I know that Christ’s infinite love as expressed in His atonement, gives us peace and hope and the assurance that all will work out.

So walk out with your head high and be ready to tackle all those things that satan puts in your way! The future is as bright as your faith.

Miracles Sometimes Come Line upon Line

In Bethsaida, the people brought a blind man to Jesus. After leading the man out of the town, Jesus “spit on his eyes, and put his hands upon him.” The man’s sight was only partially restored at this point, and so the Savior “put his hands again upon his eyes,” bringing about a full restoration. (See Mark 8:22–26.)

Elder McConkie pointed out truths we can learn from this event:

“It would appear that the successive instances of physical contact with Jesus had the effect of adding hope, assurance, and faith to the sightless one.

“… Men should seek the Lord’s healing grace with all their strength and faith, though such is sufficient for a partial cure only. … They may then gain the added assurance and faith to be made whole and well every whit. Men also are often healed of their spiritual maladies by degrees, step by step as they get their lives in harmony with the plans and purposes of Deity.”6

By performing this miracle in two distinct steps, the Lord helped the blind man to get prepared to receive the full blessing. Can we see this pattern also in our own search for miracles—something that we need to do, or not do, before being ready for a higher intervention?

WARD MESSAGE

As I was pondering about what to write about, the thought came to me, “Write about the penny.” The other day while on a walk, I saw a penny. I have always been a “find a penny, pick it up, and all day long, you’ll have good luck” type of kid, and I still am.  This penny was almost unrecognizable.  It was so smashed that you could see the silver alloy through the copper layer. As I picked it up and turned it around in my hand, for a moment, I thought, “With all this damage, I wonder if it’s still worth anything?”  I quickly changed my thought to “Of course it is!  Its value had not changed because it was not as shiny as other pennies.” Even with all its travel, damage, and scaring that this penny has been through, the value of the  penny had not changed.

We can apply this same principle to us as children of God.  We will all go through some things in our earthly journey either because of our own choices or the choices of others that will leave us a little or maybe even a lot battered, bruised, broken, and even unrecognizable.  Our worth does not change because of the earthly, spiritual, and physical scars we carry.  We are still children of God with a divine nature and eternal destiny.

Remember the worth of souls is great in the sight of God.” ( Doctrine and Covenants 18:10)

Sheri Dew said, “None of us came to earth to gain worth; we brought it with us.”

President Nelson taught in a devotional to young adults that the way young people think about who they are affects nearly every decision they make. He said three identities should be our priority.  First, to know and understand that We are children of God, second, we are children of the Covenant, and third, we are disciples of Christ. All other titles, jobs, and accomplishments come after these three identities.

President Nelson said “Make no mistake about it: your potential is divine. With your diligent seeking God will give you glimpses of who you may BECOME.”

We will all make mistakes on this journey we have chosen to participate in.  I know we are all in the process of becoming.  I know that we can become perfected only through the grace of our Savior, Jesus Christ. The world is constantly pulling at us, and teaching that happiness and contentment can be found in its ever changing values.  At this time when Satan’s power and reach is seeping even into the cracks of our homes, I find peace in Christ!  I am grateful for the knowledge that I have, of God’s eternal plan, my divine identity, and my infinite worth. I am grateful for my Savior and friend to help us all along this crazy journey of ours.  In Jesus name, Amen

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

“If your role or assignment is a supportive one — and many of us will often have that role — we must study and prepare ourselves enough to clearly state to the world that we are not apologizing for strengthening the home, but are rather pursuing our highest priorities, personally, socially and theologically. We will be noticed. We should be a light on a hill … to clearly teach the truth about our priorities and privileges as women (men) in the Church.”

WARD MESSAGE

This past month of June has been a beautiful time in Cache Valley and in the North Park neighborhood. Temperatures have stayed in the 60’s and 70’s and we have gotten a lot of moisture which has made everything green and beautiful.  In addition, we started the month off with Stake Young Men’s and Young Women’s camps and that set such a wonderful tone and spirit for our youth and continued to parents and families.

At times like these, I think of the Nephites in the Book of Mormon after the Saviors visit to them. In 4 Nephi 1: 15-17 it reads, “And it came to pass that there was no contention in the land, because of the love of God which did dwell in the hearts of the people. And there were no envying’s nor strifes nor tumults, nor whoredoms, nor lying, nor murders, nor any manner of lasciviousness, and surely there could not be a happier people among all the people who had been created by the hand of God. There were no robbers, nor murderers, neither were there Lamanites, nor any manner of -ites, but they were in one, the children of Christ, and heirs to the kingdom of God.” It sounds like a wonderful community to be a part of. The core reason for this wonderful community was because “the love of God did dwell in the hearts of the people.”

It is unrealistic to think that all these people were perfect and did not have any problems. I am sure they did not all like the same things or have the same opinion of everything. But what I do believe is that they did not let those things take priority over their love of God. Our love for God is manifested in two specific ways:  The Savior said, “If ye love me, keep my commandments” and at a later time he said, “A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another”.  Our obedience to God’s commandments and how we treat each other manifest our love of God. It was that manifestation that created the community described in 4th Nephi.

I have pondered on what this “love of God” looks like on a day-to-day basis. I see it regularly. We have numerous examples in our neighborhood of the manifestation of the love of God that dwells in our hearts.  In John 7:16-17 the Savior said, “My doctrine is not mine, but His that sent me. If any man will do His will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.”  As we strive to obey God’s commandments, repenting(improving/changing) daily, we will come to know they truly do come from a loving Heavenly Father and the Spirit of the Lord will grow stronger and stronger in our lives. As that happens, our capacity to love and serve each other will increase, giving us momentum and turning it into a force for good. We can start in our homes and expand outward. President Nelson has said, “We have never needed positive spiritual momentum more than we do now, to counteract the speed with which evil and the darker signs of the times are intensifying. Positive spiritual momentum will keep us moving forward amid the fear and uncertainty created by pandemics, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, and armed hostilities. Spiritual momentum can help us withstand the relentless, wicked attacks of the adversary and thwart his efforts to erode our personal spiritual foundation.”

Thank you for all of the examples of the love of God that dwells in our hearts.  Your examples inspire me to have the Love of God at the core of my life, and not let anything else supersede it. If we all do this, surely there could not be a happier people among all the people who had been created by the hand of God, in the North Park neighborhood.

Sincerely,

Bishop Nelson

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

Dear Seekers of Preparedness,

A vivid chapter in my life quickly comes to mind for this topic. In the mid-seventies, I lived in the San Francisco Bay area. During my high school years, many Americans were caught unprepared for the devastation of this event. It was not an earthquake, tornado, flood, or other natural disaster, but a trucker's strike! This was not a series of "supply chain" slowdowns that COVID caused lately, but rather an abrupt stoppage of all products transported through trucking channels. Our local Safeway grocery store was emptied in an afternoon, of all essential foods. Gasoline sales were limited to five gallons. You could join a very long line for gas on odd or even days, according to your plate number. We gratefully lived on our food storage for a couple of weeks, and rode bicycles a lot. We knew that our living prophet admonishing the members to build up a "year's supply" was inspired direction to protect our temporal needs.

Amen.

WARD MESSAGE

On the evening of April 23, the aurora borealis stretched down to our area for a few hours. As I watched the sky, I saw mild changes in color that moved upward on the horizon. Friends told me of the lights so I knew to watch for them and recognize them when they appeared. Most of the people I communicated with about the lights saw a hint of color but nothing spectacular. A few friends shared pictures. These pictures were brilliant with color that could not be seen by the person taking the picture. We were in awe of the magnificence of the photos. I found this absolutely fascinating! Why bother looking up? Why bother trying to capture beauty that couldn’t be obviously seen? Why bother seeking the unseen light?

Faith in Jesus Christ is to believe in miracles. That is the answer that came. I often ask people to share a recent miracle from their lives. I will ask it more often now. I have never been disappointed in a response to this question. Miracles happen in our neighborhood in quiet ways daily. I know this because God wants me to take notice as others share their experiences. The magnificence of how God works in our individual lives shows clearly when we look for Him even when it takes effort to see.

Ministering is one aspect of our gospel service that may feel only mildly recognizable for some of us. And yet, he is working through us even when we can’t see much of anything noticeable. During the recent special Stake Conference we enjoyed, we were reminded by Elder Rasband that we do good without even knowing it. Remember the loving words relayed through him from our prophet. 1-He loves you! 2-Thank you for who you are yourselves and who you are in your marriage, and in your families and in your callings as under shepherds and for your faithful tithes. 3-We need you to continue in your covenants with God and service in this church of Jesus Christ.

Make the effort to look up in prayer to have God help you see miracles in your service. Step up and step back to recognize a moment of unity with others. Keep seeking to have God direct your life and give thanks for His guidance.

I bear witness of the power of God in our lives as we look through His lens. May we ever keep our focus on His path.

WARD MESSAGE

Shortly after king Lamoni was converted unto the Lord, he was traveling to the land of Middoni with Ammon to plead with the king to release Ammon’s brethren from prison.  While they were traveling, they met with the father of Lamoni who was king over all the land.  Lamoni’s father was angry with his son for not attending a feast and for traveling with Ammon who he thought was a liar and a thief.  He went on to say that Lamoni should slay Ammon and not save Ammon’s brethren but that Lamoni should return with him to the land of Ishmael.  Lamoni responded by saying that Ammon and his brethren were just men and he wanted to continue his journey to release Ammon’s brethren from prison.  Lamoni’s father then drew his sword to slay his son but Ammon was able to save Lamoni and smote the arm of Lamoni’s father as such that he could not use it.  Now, the king over all the land is fearing for his life.  He pleads with Ammon to spare him and is willing to forsake half of his kingdom for his life to be saved.  Ammon responds that he will spare his life if he is willing to spare his son and save his brethren in prison, which the king grants him. (Alma 20)

Later, king Lamoni’s father was taught the plan of salvation by a missionary named Aaron.  The king enjoyed the message so much that he was willing to forsake all that he possessed even to all his kingdom so that he could receive this great joy. (Alma 22)  It is interesting to note that king Lamoni’s father was willing to forsake only half of his kingdom to save his physical life but was willing to forsake all of his kingdom to receive the truth in his life.  It is amazing to see how the truth greatly impresses the mind even more so than the sword.  (Alma 31:5)

How about you?  Are you embracing the truth in your life?  Are you willing to forsake much to receive more truth?  Does the truth excite you as such that you want to share it with others?

Imagine working with someone like king Lamoni’s father.  Imagine having that personal experience in your life where someone’s eyes were opened and received the truth.  Have you received a prompting to talk to someone but decided not to?  Are you thinking of someone, even now, that you should at least say something to?  If you are thinking of someone, I would invite you to act now.  Remember, the scriptures promise great joy to those that share the gospel.  (D&C 18:15-16)

MISSIONARY MESSAGE

Happy Sunday North Park Ward! This is Elder Huband serving in the Chicago Illinois mission! I have learned more things than its possible to name on my mission. But what I have learned continuously throughout my time as a missionary is the blessings of living the gospel of Jesus Christ. Heavenly Father loves us! Because He loves us, He allows us to go through trials that will strengthen us and give us experience that will be necessary for us to grow and learn from. Although many of our trials, heartaches, and tribulations are necessary, many of them are not! Heavenly Father doesn't want to see us go through unnecessary trials. But so often we bring these trials upon ourselves as a result of sin. I love the people of Chicago with all my heart! I also mourn with them because of the immense amount of suffering that so many of them go through because of the lifestyle they or others around them choose to live. Nothing strengthens my testimony more than to see these people change their lives and find so much joy by following the commandments of God. Jesus Christ is the way, The only way that leads to a truly happy life filled with true joy that cannot be found in any other way. I have seen people here in Chicago who are living witnesses to the healing and cleansing power of Jesus Christ. He lives! I know that is true.

Love you all,

Elder Huband

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

Are we prepared to meet our Maker?

President Russel M. Nelson in his opening remarks of April 2020 General Conference taught:

"Though today’s restrictions relate to a virulent virus, life’s personal trials stretch far beyond this pandemic. Future trials could result from an accident, a natural disaster, or an unexpected personal heartache.

How can we endure such trials? The Lord has told us that “if ye are prepared ye shall not fear.” Of course, we can store our own reserves of food, water, and savings. But equally crucial is our need to fill our personal spiritual storehouses with faith, truth, and testimony.

Our ultimate quest in life is to prepare to meet our Maker. We do this by striving daily to become more like our Savior, Jesus Christ. And we do that as we repent daily and receive His cleansing, healing, and strengthening power. Then we can feel enduring peace and joy, even during turbulent times. This is exactly why the Lord has implored us to stand in holy places and “be not moved.”

April 2023

WARD MESSAGE

Our ward sacrament meeting themes for April are about The Savior Jesus Christ, including the resurrection, forgiveness, and Jesus as the Good Shepherd. Of course, this is the over-arching theme every month, no matter what the lesser themes may be.

Yesterday my tulips popped out of the ground, even under the skiff of snow. As we watch spring emerge,I hope we celebrate the miracle of re-birth. A favorite quote from a Christian writer named Wendell Berry is:

“Whoever really has considered the lilies of the field or the birds of the air, and pondered the

improbability of their existence will hardly balk at the [forming] of water into wine—which was,

after all, a very small miracle. We forget the greater and still continuing miracle by which water

(with soil and sunlight) is [formed] into grapes… Holiness is everywhere in Creation, it is as

common as raindrops and leaves and blades of grass.” [From Wendell Berry, The Art of the

Commonplace: The Agrarian Essays]

Spring can remind us of our rebirth through Jesus Christ’s resurrection and our spiritual rebirth through His atonement and our repentance. Repentance is not penance or suffering, but turning to the Lord. Elder Theodore M. Burton said:

“The Old Testament was written in Hebrew and the word used for this concept of repentance is “shube” …which is… turning back to the family of the Lord where you can be received with joy

and rejoicing. Throughout the Old Testament, a fundamental theme is forsaking or turning from

evil and doing instead that which is noble and good. Not only must we change our ways; we must

as well change our very thoughts which control our actions. Repentance is a turning back to God!

“Let us now turn to the New Testament which was written in Greek. How did those Greek writers

translate the word “shube” into Greek and still retain its concept of repentance? They used the

word “metaneoeo,” …[which] means a change of mind or thought or thinking so powerful and so

strong that it changes our very way of life. I think “metaneoeo” is an excellent translation of

shube.” The meaning of both these words is to turn or change from evil to righteousness and

God.” [BYU Devotional March 26, 1985]

I invite us all to re-read the Oct. 2008 Conference talk “The Way” where Elder Corbridge says:

“[Jesus] said, ‘Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; … and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke

is easy, and my burden is light.’

Life is hard, but life is simple. Get on the path and never, ever give up. You never give up. You

just keep on going. You don’t quit, and you will make it.

There is only one way to happiness and fulfillment. Jesus Christ is the Way. Every other way, any

other way, whatever other way is foolishness.

I bear record of Him, even Jesus Christ, that He is the Son of the living God, He is the Bread of

Life, He is the Truth, He is the Resurrection and the Life, He is the Savior and the Light of the

World. He is the Way, the only Way.” [Elder Corbridge, Gen. Conf., Oct. 2008]

May we “shube” or turn to Him. May we rejoice in the rebirth of Spring while it reminds us of rebirth in

our hearts, and our hope of a future resurrection and eternal life through the Savior, Jesus Christ.

WARD MESSAGE

Worship Through Music

Here is a question to ponder. How many prayers are given in a traditional Sacrament Meeting? Most would say 4: opening and closing prayers and the 2 prayers on the Sacrament. Read this scripture and see if you change your mind?

“For my soul delighteth in the song of the heart; yea, the song of the righteous is a prayer unto me, and it shall be answered with a blessing upon their heads” (D&C 25:11–12).

It seems to me that the 3 or 4 Hymns we sing in Sacrament meeting (or for that matter; anytime we sing a Hymn) are prayers to our Heavenly Father to build faith, renew hope, express testimony, console a sad or troubled heart. How many of us don’t need Heaven’s help in our daily lives. I for one, need that help all the time, especially when worshipping at Church.

President Dallin H. Oaks in a talk entitled “Worship Through Music” Oct. 1994 General Conference said “The singing of hymns is one of the best ways to put ourselves in tune with the Spirit of the Lord.” He quoted the First Presidency message in the front our Hymn books “Inspirational music is an essential part of our church meetings. The hymns invite the Spirit of the Lord, create a feeling of reverence, unify us as members, and provide a way for us to offer praises to the Lord.

Some of the greatest sermons are preached by the singing of hymns.

When a congregation worships through singing, all present should participate. I believe some of us … are getting neglectful in our worship, including the singing of hymns. As we sing we should think about the messages of the words. Our hymns contain matchless doctrinal sermons, surpassed only by the scriptures in their truth and poetic impact. We who have “felt to sing the song of redeeming love” (Alma 5:26) need to keep singing that we may draw ever closer to him who has inspired sacred music and commanded that it be used to worship him.”

I don’t feel it matters to Heavenly Father if our singing is anywhere from perfect pitch to tone deaf. He appreciates as Pres. Nelson has said “our effort” and will bless us accordingly.

WARD MESSAGE

A few years ago, we gave both of our children their own copies of the Doctrine & Covenants for Christmas. They loved finding a favorite verse to highlight each night during family scripture study and decorating the margins with special “Come Follow Me” themed stickers. Their Old Testaments were similarly loved the following year, and we all looked forward to studying the New Testament together as a family this year.

However, we discovered that there was a strange shortage of New Testaments available for purchase at Deseret Book. Alice was able to use the full set of scriptures she received at her baptism last year, but Teddy was left without his own copy.

For weeks, Sam stopped at Deseret Book on his way home from work or called to see if they had any New Testaments in stock, but with no luck. Every night, Teddy asked, “Did you get my New Testament yet, Daddy?” “Did they have any for sale?”

Finally, about a week ago, we were able to get our hands on a New Testament for Teddy. He was so happy to have his very own book. “Thank you, Daddy! Thank you sooooo much for my New Testament!”

His gratitude for his very own book of scripture was a sweet reminder of how blessed we are to have access to God’s words. As we study the New Testament this year, I hope we realize how blessed we are to have the words of our Savior and the stories of His life available to read and study whenever we choose to open our scriptures.

WARD MESSAGE

As we start the new year, we are excited to study the New Testament!  As a Sunday School Presidency, we hope that you will make an effort to study the scriptures with Come, Follow Me as a guide to your individual and family learning.  Reading about Christ's mortal ministry this year gives us the opportunity to better understand and follow His example.  As we study in our homes, our experiences in Sunday School will also be enriched.

When I think of Sunday School, I think of how that term breaks down into two parts: "Sunday" and "school."  Each of these words acts as a reminder of important aspects related to our gospel learning. First, "Sunday": This reminds us that our learning is centered on spiritual things.  Just as God "blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it" (Genesis 2:3), we also consecrate our learning to Him.  We learn of Christ's life and teachings.  We learn how to repent and better ourselves.  We come together as a community and learn how to serve our fellow man.

Second, "school": This reminds us that we are here to learn.  We don't need to fear learning new things: God knows everything and the information doesn't seem to bother Him!  Latter-day prophets dating back to Joseph Smith have consistently encouraged study and enrichment of the mind.  In D&C 88:118 it says, "seek ye out of the best books words of wisdom; seek learning, even by study and also by faith."  Brigham Young taught that “[Our] religion... prompts [us] to search diligently after knowledge... There is no other people in existence more eager to see, hear, learn and understand truth."  He went on to note that “all wisdom, and all the arts and sciences in the world are from God, and are designed for the good of his people" (Discourses of Brigham Young, p. 247).  More recently, President Henry B. Eyring stated: "Remember, you are interested in education, not just for mortal life but for eternal life. When you see that reality clearly with spiritual sight, you will put spiritual learning first and yet not slight the secular learning...  We cannot waste time entertaining ourselves when we have the chance to read or to listen to whatever will help us learn what is true and useful. Insatiable curiosity will be our hallmark” (“Education for Real Life,” Ensign, Oct. 2002).

As we work our way through 2023, I hope we can strive to observe both the "Sunday" and the "school" in our gospel learning.

WARD MESSAGE

One Christmas when I was a small boy I remember wanting to do something nice for my little sister.  A kind neighbor offered to help.  He had a workshop where he made beautiful jewelry.  He helped me pick out a small chunk of turquoise and helped me set it in a tiny cup of silver we had fashioned in a heart shape.  We then mounted it on a small ring.  He showed me how to polish the stone on his grinder until it shown and sparkled like it was made of glass.  It took hours of careful work and I was so proud of what he had helped me create.  A gift like this required special packaging.  I didn’t want her to guess what it was so I disguised it in a tiny knick knack box that I borrowed from her dresser.  That box was wrapped in a small shoe box that was wrapped in a larger box and again in the biggest box that I could find.  My sister was beyond excited to see her name on the coveted “largest gift under the tree” that year.  Finally Christmas came.  As lil sis tore into her gift I was surprised to see how quickly excitement turned to disappointment as she discovered the smaller and smaller boxes until in tears she dropped her familiar knick knack box and left the room not even noticing the ring inside.  I don’t remember ever seeing the ring again.

Unlike me our Father in Heaven did not disguise His most precious of all gifts to us but sent prophets, signs, and wonders to foretell and mark the coming of His Son so that no one could mistake it.  Yet, many of us toss Him aside “as a thing of naught” and do not accept the supreme gift of His atonement.  Rather, we relentlessly tear into tinsel wrapped empty boxes offered by the enemy of all righteousness.

My testimony is that Jesus truly is the The Greatest Gift ever given.  For He truly is the Christ; “the mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace;” the “one thing more important than they all;” our only hope; the very light and life of the world. May we all accept fully and in all its meaning the “matchless gift of His divine Son.”  So that Earth may finally “receive her King.”

NOVEMBER 2022

WARD MESSAGE

As a new Relief Society presidency, we each want to share a favorite scripture and testimony. We are grateful for this time of year to think on our Savior and hope you will be edified in your testimony as we share ours.

A favorite scripture of mine is Alma 37:6-7 “Now you may suppose that this is foolish in me; but behold I say unto you, that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass; and small means in many instances doth confound the wise.

And the Lord God doth work by means to bring about his great and eternal purposes; and by very small means the Lord doth confound the wise and bringeth about the salvation of many souls.”

Remember small and simple things make up our days: smiles, sincere compliments, meals, driving places, work interactions, caring for children, prayer, scripture study time, fasting, noticing the needs of others. God is mindful of each person’s small and simple things that work together to bring about the salvation of us all. The Savior is our example in this, as in all things. Love, Sister Thompson

One of my favorite scriptures is Alma 37:37. 'Counsel with the Lord in all thy doings, and he will direct thee for good; yea, when thou liest down at night lie down unto the Lord, that he may watch over you in your sleep; and when thou risest in the morning let thy heart be full of thanks unto God; and if ye do these things, ye shall be lifted up at the last day.'

I have always loved this scripture because it talks about the power of prayer and gives a simple outline of how to pray and the blessings that come from prayer.  I think it shows the power that prayer can be in our lives. We are all God’s children. He loves us and knows our needs, and He wants us to communicate with Him through prayer. Love, Traci Pierson

There are so many scriptures that I would love to share.  Recently, the first sentence of Helaman 5:12 has been on my mind.  “And now my sons, remember, remember, that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation;”  The words remember, remember have sunk deep into my mind and heart.  As I have pondered and reflected this, it strengthened my testimony of the covenant truths that I have known for myself, but more so it has given me a desire and push to help my family to also remember.  We must remember those times and moments when we have felt the spirit. We must remember and recognize all that our Heavenly Father and Christ has blessed us with.  The other day I heard that to learn is to remember.  It is my prayer that we may remember all that God has done for us so that we may learn of His goodness and love that He has for each of us. Love, Sister Vicki Cardon

I have been pondering on the scripture President Nelson quoted in this October’s general conference talk.  “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28).  Everyone I talk to is, in some way, feeling burdens that seem so heavy.  One way I feel relief from the burdens of this world is when I attend the temple and read the scriptures. At times I haven’t loved going to the temple or reading the scriptures like I wanted to but I have discovered a truth given as a challenge by our Prophet.  The more I go to the temple, the more I read the scriptures, the more I love them.  It is a gift from God through the power of the Holy Ghost.   Love, Lynda Larsen

OCTOBER 2022

WARD MESSAGE

We are so blessed to have a living prophet, and his messages so profound that I have to echo just a few of

them here, since any messages I could come up with pale in comparison.

President Russell M. Nelson October 2022

... despite an onslaught of sobering news,

... so many wonderful things are ahead,

In coming days we will see the greatest manifestations of the savior’s power that the world has ever seen. Between now and the

time He returns with power and great glory He will bestow countless privileges, blessings, and miracles upon the faithful.”

...

As I have stated before, the gathering of Israel is the most important work taking place on earth today. One crucial element of

this gathering is preparing a people who are able, ready, and worthy to receive the Lord when He comes again, a people who

have already chosen Jesus Christ over this fallen world, a people who rejoice in their agency to live the higher, holier laws of

Jesus Christ.

I call upon you, my dear brothers and sisters, to become this righteous people.”

...

As we strive to live the higher laws of Jesus Christ, our hearts and our very natures begin to change. The Savior lifts us above

the pull of this fallen world by blessing us with greater charity, humility, generosity, kindness, self-discipline, peace, and rest.”

The reward for keeping covenants with God is heavenly power—power that strengthens us to withstand our trials,

temptations, and heartaches better. This power eases our way. Those who live the higher laws of Jesus Christ have access to

His higher power. Thus, covenant keepers are entitled to a special kind of rest that comes to them through their covenantal

relationship with God.”

The Prophet’s blessings for us were also amazing...

I bless you in your quest to overcome this world. I bless you to increase your faith in Jesus Christ and learn better how to

draw upon His power. I bless you to be able to discern truth from error. I bless you to care more about the things of God than

the things of this world. I bless you to see the needs of those around you and strengthen those you love. Because Jesus Christ

overcame this world, you can too.”

I add my testimony that these blessings and messages come from our Heavenly Father through a living

prophet, I so testify in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

TEMPLE AND FAMILY HISTORY

In September, I received notification from FamilySearch that my deceased grandmother was celebrating her 94th birthday. I took the time to log-in to FamilySearch to reminisce and look at the photos of my grandmother that had been uploaded into the “memories” section of her file. While doing so, I was prompted to send a text to my immediate family with a high school graduation picture of my grandmother and an announcement of her birthday. The text resulted in responses of longing, of inquiry, and of remembrance. In essence, we held a virtual family history activity without anyone realizing it. As Elder Gerrit W. Gong has said, “as we discover our story we connect, we belong, we become.” This is family history work.

SEPTEMBER 2022

WARD MESSAGE

Helping Our Loved Ones in Times of Need

Many have heavy hearts because a son or daughter, husband or wife has turned from paths of faith and righteousness towards strange lands, into mists of darkness, and away from gospel principles. Your life might be filled with anguish, pain, and, at times, despair. Their choices might cause you to question your own faith or even the spiritual experiences you have had in your own life. Elder Richard G. Scott has told us how we can be comforted by the Lord.

First, he counseled that we must recognize two foundation principles:

Elder Scott suggested seven ways we can help our loved ones:

First—Love without limitations. When in a dream Lehi partook of the fruit of the tree of life and was filled with joy, his first thought was to share it with each member of his family, including the disobedient.

Second—Do not condone the transgressions, but extend every hope and support to the transgressor.  Alma counseled his son Corianton, who had violated the law of chastity, with both directness and compassion.

Third—Teach truth. Nephi taught his brothers: “I did exhort them with all the energies of my soul, and with all the faculty which I possessed, that they would give heed to the word of God and remember to keep his commandments always in all things”

Fourth—Honestly forgive as often as is required. The Lord declared: “If he … repenteth in the sincerity of his heart, him shall ye forgive, and I will forgive him also. …

Fifth—Pray trustingly. “The … fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much” (James 5:16).

Sixth—Keep perspective. When you have done all that you can reasonably do, rest the burden in the hands of the Lord.

Elder Scott Counseled “A small pebble in front of your eyes, takes on the appearance of a mighty boulder. It is all  you can see. It becomes all-consuming—like the problems of a loved one that affect our lives every waking moment. When the things you realistically can do to help are done, leave the matter in the hands of the Lord and worry no more. Do not feel guilty because you cannot do more. Do not waste your energy on useless worry. The Lord will take the pebble that fills your vision and cast it down among the challenges you will face in your eternal progress. It will then be seen in perspective. In time, you will feel impressions and know how to give further help. You will find more peace and happiness, will not neglect others that need you, and will be able to give greater help because of that eternal perspective.”

MISSIONARY MESSAGE

Buongiorno a tutti! My name is Andrew Needham. I am the son of James and Shelbe Needham. I am serving my mission in The Great Italy Rome Mission. I currently live in a city called Caserta. It is about 15 miles inland from Naples.

I want to share some thoughts today about the relationship between faith and enduring to the end. I have been reading the Book of Mormon with the principle of faith in mind. I am currently reading about Nephi and his family's journey to the promised land. I think this story can apply to a missionary as well as all of us who are “journeying through a wilderness”.

When reading 1 Nephi chapter 17:1-3. We can see many great things that I have also highlighted.

1 And it came to pass that we did again take our journey in the wilderness, and we did travel

nearly eastward from that time forth. And we did travel and wade through much affliction in the wilderness, and our women did bear children in the wilderness.

2 And so great were the blessings of the Lord upon us, that while we did live upon raw meat

in the wilderness, our women did give plenty of suck for their children, and were strong yea, even like unto the men, and they began to bear their journeyings without murmurings.

3 And thus we see that the commandments of God must be fulfilled. And if it so be that the children of men keep the commandments of God he doth nourish them, and strengthen them, and provide means whereby they can accomplish the thing which he has commanded them; wherefore, he did provide means for us while we did sojourn in the wilderness.

I underlined the things that stand out to me. Life can be tough. As a missionary here in Southern Italy, I've been able to meet many refugees escaping war and poverty from places like Africa, Pakistan, and other Middle Eastern countries. For them, life is very very challenging and I am humbled by their efforts. Our lives have challenges as well. I have learned that as we travel through our own wilderness as Nephi did, without murmuring, following the commandments (accepting the will of God in many instances), and recognizing His loving hand in our life (seeing the blessings), He will provide means for us as we sojourn in the wilderness. Having faith in Christ gives me added hope and strength in my difficulties. And as we trust in Christ and His promises He will bless us for our faith.

I encourage you to reread the story of Nephi (1 Nephi chapters 15-17) and make it personal to you and to your own circumstances. As you do with a prayerful heart, with real intent to act on spiritual promptings and having faith in Christ, you will receive a spirit of comfort and help in your daily challenges.

AUGUST 2022

WARD MESSAGE

The youth theme for this year is Proverbs 3:5-6 'Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.'

The lord can be seen in the very details of our lives and he loves each of us.  He cares about us and watches over us.  He knows our challenges, our trials and our desires.

Alma was commanded by an angel to return to the wicked city of Ammonihah and preach the gospel despite his prior failure, he was obedient and returned speedily to Ammonihah.  By the time he got to the city he was hungry and asked a stranger for something to eat.  Amulek  received Alma saying an angel had told him the prophet would visit.  It was not a coincidence that he went into the city by the way that would lead him to Alma, or that he would become his missionary companion.

Our lives if we let them, if we trust the lord,  will be led by and designed by God. We can be moved from one place to another when we respond to his spiritual promptings and as we look back we can see his hand in our lives.  Significant events will happen in the gospel and in the church that further the kingdom of God on earth.  These are not by accident.  God placed Amulek in the right place when Alma needed him and likewise he will place events and associations into each of our lives that will further his work on earth.  Small incidents and opportunities will be placed in our lives and God will be in the details of them, to prepare us to lift our families and others as we help build the kingdom of God.  When we are righteous, when we acknowledge Him, and strive to be worthy and qualified we will progress to places unimagined.

I am so grateful for the Lord's hand in my life.  For the direction I have received, the places I have been and people I have met because of him.  I am grateful for the opportunity I have had to serve in this ward and for those that have been placed around me to help me, serve me, and lift me up.  The youth in this ward are amazing, they are His children, and I know that He loves them and is preparing them to be everything that He wants them to be.   As we watched The fifth Sunday video of the prophet, and his expectation and invitations to the youth to be missionaries,  I could not help but think, Wow!  What an exciting time,  hard, but exciting time.  We get to help each other, we get to be a part of his Great work.  God has placed us here at this time in this place to do it, and he will prepare us.   I do not believe in coincidences, I do believe in miracles and I do believe in God, I have seen him in the details of my life and the lives of those around me, and I trust him.

WARD MESSAGE

In our most recent Fifth Sunday discussion in May, I started off our meeting by asking the question, “What do you love about being a parent?”  The answers varied, but an underlying theme was that seeing our children learn, develop and thrive brought us as parents a great amount of joy and satisfaction.  Our Heavenly Father has told us that His work and His glory is to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of His children.  His work and His glory is to be a parent.  We are blessed with the opportunity to take part in that process by helping our children learn and develop along the covenant path.

We are all in different phases of parenting.  In our discussion there were some thoughts and principles we discussed that I believe are effective regardless of which phase of life we are in that I’d like to review.

a. The premise for this pyramid comes from the Arbinger company.  I have modified the base of the pyramid from the description they used of, “Personal Way of Being” with “Personal Relationship with Jesus Christ.  The key takeaways are:

Brothers and Sisters let us focus our work and our glory on helping our children return to their Heavenly Father.  Let us prayerfully petition our Heavenly Father for guidance on how we can connect with our children individually.  When the Savior visited the Nephites and asked for them to bring their children to him and He blessed them one by one.  May we follow His example and “Behold our little ones”.

WARD MESSAGE

This month is Father’s Day. Last month we celebrated Mother’s Day. What a blessing to be parent, even though it comes with many challenges. Especially during this time when evil seems to run rampant to entice those we love. We have many inventions that put so much good in front of us. But… they can rob us of precious time and point us on a path of distraction and possible destruction, through choices and sin Satan puts in our paths.

So, what can we do to help our families, friends, neighbors?

In the talk, “I Have Given You an Example”; by Elder Richard G Scott; April 2014

He says: “How can each of us become such a significant influence? We must be sure to sincerely love those we want to help in righteousness so they can begin to develop confidence in God’s love. For so many in the world, the first challenge in accepting the gospel is to develop faith in a Father in Heaven, who loves them perfectly. It is easier to develop that faith when they have friends or family members (or leaders/teachers) who love them in a similar way. “

Giving them confidence in your love can help them develop faith in God’s love. Then through your loving, thoughtful communication, their lives will be blessed by your sharing lessons you learned, experiences you have had, and principles you have followed to find solutions to your own struggles. Show your sincere interest in their well-being; then share your testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ.”

Some may feel inadequate in the knowledge of the gospel, or in reaching out to others to teach and inspire.

In the talk, “How can I Understand?”, by Elder Ulysses Soares; April 2019,

When we accept the saviors invitation to “come and see, “we need to abide in Him, immersing ourselves in the scriptures, rejoicing in them, learning His doctrine, and striving to live the way He lived. Only then will we come to know Him, Jesus Christ, and recognize His voice, knowing that as we come unto Him and believe in Him, we shall never hunger nor thirst. We will be able to discern the truth at all times.

We need to show our beliefs through the way we live. The best teacher is a good role model. Teaching something that we truly live can make a difference in the hearts of those we teach. If we desire people, whether that be family or not, to joyfully treasure up the Scriptures and the teachings of living apostles and prophets of our day, they need to see our souls delighting in them. Likewise, if we want them to know that President Russell M Nelson is the prophet, seer, and revelator in our day, they need to see us raise our hands to sustain him and realize that we follow his inspired teachings. As the well-known American saying goes, “Actions speak louder than words.”

So, what do we do as parents? What do we leave behind when we are called to our heavenly home?

We can leave an example of our faith, a desire to serve our God, to be obedient and faithful to our covenants. That those around us know of their importance. We can be an example to always pray to Him, trust in Him. We can leave a testimony of the scriptures, not only verbally, but by example, searching, learning. We can do our best to teach and serve those in our family as well as those around us. Not just words but to help them, that they may understand. To always show how to be kind and slow to anger. To be grateful for all God has given us.

What better way to leave a legacy, and to show our Heavenly Father our love for Him, than that we did our best.

I just want to give thanks for Heavenly Father’s gift of the Plan of Salvation and His Son, Jesus Christ, and the Atonement. I know He loves each and everyone of us. May we all find strength to do what is needful.

TEMPLE AND FAMILY HISTORY

This past Monday we observed Memorial Day. This holiday was set apart to mourn and honor those who died while serving in the U.S. military. In addition, many take the opportunity to remember family who have passed and reflect on the blessings received from their sacrifices. I always remember going with my parents to visit local cemeteries to decorate the graves of ancestors with bouquets of spring flowers. While at the cemetery, family would share memories of ancestors, many of whom I had never met. It was always fun to hear the stories, see the pictures, and get to know those who had gone before.

Did you know, Family Search provides us with the ability to store photo’s, stories, and other “memories” of ancestors that are not only accessible to us individually, but to our entire family, all year round. The North Park Ward Temple and Family History Committee would like to encourage you to add memories to your family records in Family Search.

WARD MESSAGE

The many messages of General Conference and others during Easter time have had us thinking a lot about our Savior Jesus Christ and the many responsibilities He has been given by our Father in Heaven. Central in all the messages of the prophets of all ages is the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

The prophet Ezra Taft Benson said:

Why is it expedient that we center our confidence, our hope, and our trust in one solitary figure? Why is faith in Him so necessary to peace of mind in this life and hope in the world to come?

Our answers to these questions determine whether we face the future with courage, hope, and optimism or with apprehension, anxiety, and pessimism.

My message and testimony is this: Only Jesus Christ is uniquely qualified to provide that hope, that confidence, and that strength to overcome the world and rise above our human failings. To do that, we must place our faith in Him and live by His laws and teachings.”

I testify that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, that He lives, that He is the way the truth and the light,   the source of living water and the bread of life. He is our creator, and our redeemer. The list goes on and on. I admonish you to take time and reflect on all that our Lord and Savior has done for you and answer for yourself the question ...

What think ye of Christ?

MISSIONARY MESSAGE

Hola North Park ward! I hope everyone is doing well. How cool it is to be able to share something with you all. This last week we had one of the coolest experiences that I would like to share. It began on a Saturday. That morning we had left a bit early from our apartment to go and give a member a blessing in the hospital. Everything went well, and considering the rickety elevator didn't break we knew the Lord was watching out for us. On our way back home we decided we would try and meet some new people and see if anyone would be interested in learning more about the gospel. We met a couple outside of the clinic and they didn't show much interest at all. Their sister was in therapy so we offered to pray with them and then we left. Skip forward to the following Friday. My companion and I were running around that afternoon doing a number of baptismal interviews for people in our district. We probably bike 22km on sketchy Argentine roads. As we were leaving from our last interview and stopped at the block to make sure we were headed in the right way. As we are stopped a car drives by, stops, and backs up with the window rolled down. There is a couple in the car and the guy is like "Hey, do you guys remember me?" My head was spinning with all the Spanish people, places, and names. I couldn't remember him for the life of me! He explains to us that he is the person from the hospital. Amidst the confusion his sister gets out of the car and gives us both a hug."Your prayer worked!" They exclaimed. "She is healed enough to be able to leave the hospital! We can't thank you guys enough." Furthermore they knew the person who we had just interviewed. We got their numbers and will be setting up a lesson with them. Coincidence? I think not! When we put our faith in the Lord and just get out and do good, God will show forth his hand and write a story that's better than we could've ever imagined. (Matthew 25:40, Mosiah 2:17)

WARD MESSAGE

Ministering as Jesus Christ Taught

We recognize that Covid-19 has had a profound impact on us by limiting our interactions with our neighbors. It has made many feel isolated and limited the ways we could minister, or show love, to one another. During His life on earth, Jesus Christ taught the importance of loving others. He called it the greatest of all commandments.

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” —Matthew 22:37–39

Jesus taught what he meant by love through parables such as the Prodigal Son which, among other lessons, taught the love of family. The parable of the Good Samaritan taught that our neighbors included all people. Jesus taught that the love of God and of our neighbor is the foundation of His gospel. Near the end of His ministry, He expanded on this teaching when He gave his last instructions: “A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you. … By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” (John 13:34–35). As we love one another we become more like Jesus—we’re more patient, forgiving, and compassionate with the people around us. It may feel awkward or uncomfortable to reach out to our unknown neighbors, but consider the yearnings expressed in the hymn:

More holiness give me, More strivings within, More patience in suffering, More sorrow for sin, More faith in my Savior, More sense of his care, More joy in his service, More purpose in prayer.”—More Holiness Give Me, #131

Through His grace those feelings of awkwardness will be overcome. Just like Jesus, we can make a difference in people’s lives when we show sincere love for one another. Consider three ways:

1. Serve others

Jesus taught that whenever we serve others—whenever we feed the hungry or clothe the naked or take care of the sick—we’re serving Him.

Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” —Matthew 25:40

2. Be kind

Jesus was kind, patient, and compassionate. He reached out and showed love to all people, regardless of their circumstances. He showed empathy and was supportive of others encouraging them towards future progress.

3. Reach out to people in need

Sometimes the people who need us most don’t always tell us. As you go through your day, look out for people who might need your help. God often uses us to serve those in need. Pay attention to any thoughts and feelings that inspire you to act—that may be God encouraging you to reach out. This is the essence of ministering.

We have a reprieve from the pandemic with just a handful of cases now in our area. Let us reach out while we can and contact our neighbors, show love, and minister in the pattern of Jesus Christ.

MISSIONARY MESSAGE

Near the beginning of last month, I was teaching the message of the Restoration to a non-member. At the end of the visit, we invited a recent convert who had joined us in the teaching to share his testimony. He shared a simple and pure perspective on the Book of Mormon. When I first started meeting with him, he was giving us nearly any excuse thinkable to avoid reading. It was a struggle to help him build the habit of studying without us. It took several visits and a lot of reminders before we saw much progress. In this moment, he shared with our friend that it was one of the most important things in his life and that he won't go a day without reading it. Frequent study in the Book of Mormon is very important for members of the Church and those learning about the church to know of its veracity. I invite those that are not already reading in it to start reading in it.

March 2022

WARD MESSAGE

I love church music. Music can invite the spirit into our homes, meetings, and lives.  For me personally, music callings have been especially important.  I met my wife Hilary thanks to being the choir director while she was the choir accompanist!

Music can bless all of us in different ways.  This past December, church leaders updated the General Handbook that provides guidance regarding church policies and procedures.  Past editions of the handbook specified that brass and percussion instruments were not appropriate for sacrament meeting.  The new handbook acknowledges that while “organs and pianos are the standard instruments” for church music, “bishoprics may approve the use of other instruments.”  Additionally, the new handbook states that “sacred music that is written or sung in culturally diverse musical styles may help unify congregations.”  Although I don’t expect to hear the electric guitar in church anytime soon, I love that the new guidelines make allowance for a reverent variety of music.

The increased leeway for musical diversity reminds me of the words of the apostle Paul, who compared the members of the church of Christ to parts of the body:

For the body is not one member, but many…  If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?  But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him…  But now are they many members, yet but one body. (1 Cor. 12: 14, 17, 18, 20)

Just as we can celebrate some reverent musical diversity, we can also celebrate our own diverse gifts as Latter-day Saints and children of God. I hope that we can all take a moment to appreciate the blessings of music and the blessings of being united in a ward body with so many unique and valuable members.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

I'm sure we have all heard of the conflict overseas, but how does that effect us here? While our hearts ache for those who have lost their homes, loved ones, and livelihoods, we must remain ever vigilant. Russia and Ukraine export one quarter of the world's wheat and supply much of the natural gas to the rest of Europe. That may not directly impact us yet, however, the costs will continue to rise.

Set goals this month in your spiritual and emotional preparedness

Spiritual examples - being more diligent in your scripture study or prayers and personal revelation

WARD MESSAGE

With Valentine’s Day coming up we are reminded of the people we love the most and get the chance to show them. How do we show the people we love how much they mean to us? What about those around us that don’t feel love and kindness and inclusion? Recently in Sacrament meeting we have heard talks on unity. I believe we first need to build unity with our Heavenly Father. Acts 17:28 says, “In him we live, and move, and have our being.” That is the ultimate of unity. When we express qualities such as kindness, honesty, and spiritual love toward others, we are expressing the truth that we are at one with our Heavenly Father.

Unity is a commandment of God. It is the law of the celestial kingdom. As we live the gospel and love and serve others, we feel at one with our brothers and sisters and more in tune with the divine.

In Come Follow Me, Enoch and his people are building up Zion. They build an ideal society by caring for the poor and promoting peace. They make covenants, dwell together in righteousness, and become one with each other and with Jesus Christ. Moses 7:18 says, “And the Lord called his people Zion, because they were of one heart and one mind, and dwelt in righteousness; and there were no poor among them.”

This year during Valentine’s we can create unity within our homes, within our ward, our community and our world by following Enoch and his people’s example of building up Zion and becoming of one heart and one mind.

President Nelson recently said it best at New Year’s as we set goals and resolutions. He said, “Resolve to be kind to others. When the Savior Jesus Christ visited the Americas, as recorded in the Book of Mormon, one of the first things He taught was the need to eliminate contention in our lives. So, please be compassionate, be understanding, be slow to judge, and be quick to forgive.” He said it perfectly! The best way to create love and unity in our lives is to follow these examples.

I truly hope we all feel love and kindness this time and season but more importantly that we share that love and kindness to all of those around us. HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!!!

A couple of things this month:

"The revelation to produce and store food may be as essential to our temporal welfare today as boarding the ark was to the people in the days of Noah" (Ezra Taft Benson, "To the Fathers in Israel," Ensign, Nov. 1987, 49)

MISSIONARY MESSAGE

This week I was reading in Come Follow Me (by the way If u haven't started - I recommend u do!) But in Moses 1:39 it says - “For behold, this is my work and my glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.” We all have a part helping Jesus Christ with His work and His glory with the message of the gospel. We just have two hands but those two hands can deliver this work and spread the good news - text, messages, emails, posts… In Moses 4:1 it says, “…Satan is the same which was from the beginning, and he came before me, saying—Behold, here am I, send me, I will be thy son, and I will redeem all mankind, that one soul shall not be lost, and surely I will do it; wherefore give ME thine honor.” Jesus said “Here am I send me” just like Satan had offered but the intent was to bring glory to his Father. We all can say - Here I am, send me. I am glad I got to say that when asked to serve a mission. I get to say as it says in 3 Nephi 5:13 “13 Behold, I am a disciple of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. I have been called of him to declare his word among his people, that they might have everlasting life.” This is our purpose - this is WONDERFUL work! Just GO & DO!!

TEMPLE AND FAMILY HISTORY

President Russell M. Nelson said “We invite all of God’s children on both sides of the veil to come unto their Savior, receive the blessings of the holy temple, have enduring joy, and qualify for eternal life.”

Heavenly Father has prepared a way for us to meet this invitation. Participating in temple and family history service can help us discover more about ourselves and our ancestors. We connect with them by performing essential ordinances for them in temples. As we help our deceased family members progress on the covenant path, we can increase the influence of the Spirit in our lives and deepen our testimonies of the plan of salvation and our savior Jesus Christ.

WARD MESSAGE

Christmas gives me time to reflect on the past and what the future might hold.  It also allows me to catch up on a few old movies.  I think of one scene in the movie, The Princess Bride where they bring the near-dead Wesley to Miracle Max.  Miracle Max asks two questions: “What’s so important,” and “What have you got that’s worth living for?” Maybe we should ask ourselves these questions from time to time.

Disney would have us believe that when you wish upon a star, your dreams come true.  Wishes and dreams are nice things to consider, but the hard realities of life teach us that most things don’t go as planned and often the change in plans leaves us unsure and unsettled.

Adversity will strike us all in very different ways this coming year.  Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf said, “As a fighter pilot and airline captain, I learned that while I could not choose the adversity I would encounter during a flight, I could choose how I prepared and how I reacted.”

The study of the Doctrine & Covenants this past year has emphasized to me the struggles the early saints had as they were forced out of homes, on their unfortunate migration westward.  I think of others mentioned that were founders of the faith, only to become vile enemies of their former friends and associates.

What can we do so that the winds of adversity do not turn us against our faith?  Elder Uchtdorf gave us a few reminders we could use this coming year:

I hope as we grasp the opportunities of this new year, that we will dwell on the things that are most important to us.  For me, these are faith and family.  I urge all of you to take an extra few moments on the things that matter most.  For Wesley, it took 15 minutes for the Miracle Max magic pill to work.  For us, it may take a lifetime.

A Special Message

As wonderful a place as Cache Valley is to live, and it really is, there is so much space here to help people. This help comes in many forms and levels. Shoveling snow, which I’m tired of now, is a great act of service for sure, as are the other unseen acts regularly performed in our neighborhood and beyond. My concern is greater acts of service for those marginalized and unseen, or barely noticed, people and families in the valley. The family living in the motor home that regularly needs gas to run the heater, especially now. The men and women, sometimes with kids, on the corners of a few high traffic streets. Not sure where they’ve gone these past few weeks, but I pray they and their kids are safe and warm. The lonely veteran contemplating suicide. The recent refugee trying to survive, acclimate and deal with trauma. The adult who is desperate to change and end a cycle of recidivism or addiction. We enjoy enough wealth and prosperity to dramatically reduce the needs of many of these children of Heavenly Father and Heavenly Mother.

An Elders Quorum lesson a while back left me restless and unsatisfied. The church does amazing things worldwide and we can be proud of those efforts. But I worry that we are a bit too self-congratulatory. The needs in our community are many and varied. From a veteran taking his own life recently to many hungry people, there are so many local needs to fill.

One trend that I’ve noticed in working with non-profits and at-risk youth is that many services are not well known. A recently homeless man struggled mightily to get connected to the resources needed to obtain stability, keep his job and keep his distance from people and pressure that would have, in his own words, probably done him in. The right connection was made, and he had an appointment the same day for emergency housing assistance.

The following is a partial and selective list of resources that can be of assistance. The hope is that as we go about our daily lives, overhear a conversation in the grocery line or at work, notice an acquaintance, have someone confide in us, feel prompted to act, that we will know how to help. This is the work I believe Christ would have us do.

Missionary Message

One of my favorite mission experiences was in Culpeper. We were driving home from exchanges and saw a car stopped in the middle of the highway! So we stopped and got out to ask them what was wrong - and they told us their battery was dead! So we pushed the car out of the road, and began helping them jump their car. The Zone Leaders saw us stopped on the road and came by to help! And turned out he's an inactive member who hadn't been to church in a couple months because he moved. His wife wasn't a member, too! They were SO grateful. We helped work on their engine for another hour and got the chance to talk more in Spanish with them. Now his wife will have a cool conversion story when she gets baptized!  Also on a side note jumping the car didn't work. After trying a few things, we found out that he was just out of gas! This week we whitewashed the area that the Moving Elders used to cover, and they never had time for missionary work. That gives us an opportunity to start from the ground up! We are teaching Spanish class and got 12 referrals for it in the past week, which is good because we had zero people to teach when we got to the area. I’m thankful for the support of our ward and I love my Savior Jesus Christ!

Love, Elder Seth Wilkinson

WARD MESSAGE

For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given: and the government shall be upon His shoulder; and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.(Isaiah 9:5)

As we celebrate the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ let us remember He is the Prince of Peace.  His coming fulfilled prophesy and ushered in a higher and holier way of life.  Living His gospel brings peace into our lives, our homes, our neighborhoods, our country and our world.

During this Christmas season may we all live the gospel of the Prince of Peace.

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” (John 14:27)

Merry Christmas!

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

Surely we all hope that the hour of need will never come. Some have said, ‘We have followed this counsel in the past and have never had need to use our year’s supply, so we have difficulty keeping this in mind as a major priority.’ Perhaps following this counsel could be the reason why they have not needed to use their reserve.” - President James E. Faust

Take a few minutes this month to make a list of your daily necessities i.e. personal hygiene items, regular meal essentials, socks & underwear. Now with that list put in to practice 'Two is One and One is None' to be sure you have extras of those items for when your daily necessities run low or not.

TEMPLE & FAMILY HISTORY

Throughout November, several of the lessons in “Come Follow Me” have been focused on revelation given to the Prophet Joseph Smith in relation to Family History work and Temple service. Doctrine and Covenants, section 128 is an epistle from Joseph Smith communicating what the Lord had taught him about the salvation of the dead, and Joseph’s joy that this doctrine had been revealed. At the close of this section Joseph said:

Let us, therefore, as a church and a people, and as Latter-day Saints, offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness; and let us present in his holy temple, when it is finished, a book containing the records of our dead, which shall be worthy of all acceptations.”

The North Park Ward, Temple and Family History committee would like to encourage you to make time to participate in Family History work and Temple service.

November 2021

WARD MESSAGE

We are approaching such a wonderful time of the year. The next few months will be full of family, food, music, and activities centered around gratitude and our Savior.

In the book of Matthew, we read about how the Savior traveled in the wilderness for 3 days with more than 4,000 people following and traveling with him. The people were hungry and asked Jesus, “Whence should we have so much bread in the wilderness, as to fill so great a multitude?” The people were focused on what was lacking, rather than what they had. The story continues, “And Jesus saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? And [the disciples] said, Seven, and a few little fishes. And [ Jesus] commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground. And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.”

Jesus gave thanks for what they had and made no comment about what they lacked.  A miracle followed and “...they did all eat, and were filled...”

In Alma 34:38 we read, “That ye contend no more against the Holy Ghost, but that ye receive it, and take upon you the name of Christ; that ye humble yourselves even to the dust, and worship God, in whatsoever place ye may be in, in spirit and in truth; and that ye live in thanksgiving daily, for the many mercies and blessings which he doth bestow upon you.”

In the craziness of the holiday season, let’s not forget to express gratitude for what we have, and not focus on what we lack. President Monson beautifully taught us that “to express

gratitude is gracious and honorable, to enact gratitude is generous and noble, but to live with gratitude ever in our hearts is to touch heaven.”

I am grateful for all of you and hope you have a wonderful holiday season!

MISSIONARY MESSAGE

A couple weeks ago we were teaching this cute little family. A mom and her 3 kids. The kids didn't grow up religious and don't know if there is a God, so we've been teaching them about God and how to pray. The little boy who's about 8 or 9 just wants to know if God is real so bad. After we taught him how to pray, just in the middle of the lesson he stopped like 3 times and just said a prayer out loud to know if God is real. As we were talking, his mom shared with them a story from her past of how she had seen God helping her in her life. The little boy got so excited and said "He is real!!" It was so sweet! Just like in this cute mom's life, God is in all of our lives showing us that He is real and that He loves us. We just need to take the time reflect and see them. - Sister Libbie Thornton

TEMPLE & FAMILY HISTORY

In the October General Conference, President Russell M. Nelson spoke about the renovation of the Salt Lake Temple and foundation reinforcements being made “that will withstand the forces of nature into the Millennium.” He related the renovation to each of us individually by saying, “My dear brothers and sisters, these are the latter days. If you and I are to withstand the forthcoming perils and pressures, it is imperative that we each have a firm spiritual foundation built upon the rock of our Redeemer, Jesus Christ.”

President Nelson’s closing remarks for conference included a plea to us to “make time for the Lord!” He said, “make your own spiritual foundation firm and able to stand the test of time by doing those things that allow the Holy Ghost to be with you always.”

The North Park Ward, Temple and Family History committee would like to encourage you to make time to participate in Family History work and Temple service. We believe that these activities will reinforce your spiritual foundation and help accomplish what President Nelson has encouraged us to do.

WARD MESSAGE

There is a great and glorious Labor of Love going on, a labor or bringing to pass the immortality and eternal lives of those who seek to know and follow Jesus Christ. A loving Heavenly Father has given us the best pathway to find eternal joy, and He gives us all the choice to choose that path over the many other pathways available that lead elsewhere.

Will we embrace His way and follow His prophets? We are now witnesses to many being drawn away from their divine heritage by the philosophies of men. Many choosing to abstain from the joys of a righteous and eternal posterity and the mutual rejoicing that comes from honoring one's ancestry, and so they are left unto themselves having neither root nor branch to sustain them through eternity.

“...the house of Israel hath gathered together to fight against the twelve apostles of the Lamb” (1 Nephi 11:35)

There are those who critique anything that the first presidency, and the twelve apostles say in order to find justification in their own pathways through life. They seem to revel in the finding of each and every perceived flaw.

“...remember, remember, that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation...” (Helaman 5:12)

Who better to help us with building this foundation than those He calls for this exact purpose. Let us embrace the leaders of our ward, stake, and church. All are prophets for their station of responsibility, and find the good in their words of wisdom. For they are like those of us who want to learn of God’s ways, and turn from our old ways. Reasoning together to find God’s pathway and not our own. He teaches us correct principles and then expects us to work out the details together, taking turns in various callings of responsibility to learn to become like Him. This is His way, and He expects us to sustain one another in these callings despite our flaws and imperfections. I can’t wait to hear more words of wisdom from our leaders in Ward Conference, Stake conference, and General Conference to see what they have learned from the Lord. I know they are called of God, and I will sustain them in their righteous efforts to help us find His path leading back to Him.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

“There will be no general warning to the membership [of the church] that things will be shortly falling apart. We have been commanded to follow the signs of the times and that is all the warning we need or will be given, but the membership is asleep. Like the ten virgins, we have been commanded to watch and prepare, but like the people in the days of Noah, many member have become lulled into a sense of security. This “lack of warning” is designed to weed out the tares; the “all is well in Zion,” crowd... When the cry sounds, there is no time for preparation.”

-Spencer W. Kimball

MISSIONARY MESSAGE

“This week, I listened to a BYU devotional by Bruce C Hafen called “A Disciple's Journey”. While talking about our journey back to be with and be like God someday, he mentioned, “The skills of human growth are best learned slowly against great difficulty”. Doesn't this seem to go against everything in human nature, where we tend to want things quick and easy? Of course God's way would be different than that of the world, but it doesn't make this process any easier. While thinking back on my life, it's true that the most painfully slow, difficult times created the most growth from one year to the next. If you are going through one of these times right now, turn to Christ for help! And don't Lose hope because these trying times are helping you progress more than anything else could.

Nos vermos,

Hermana Madsen
